QISP Qualification
Thank you for your interest in the Industrial General Permit (IGP) Training Program. In this section you can find information about Qualified Industrial Stormwater Practitioner (QISP) qualification, renewal, the qualification directory, and frequently asked questions (FAQ).
If you are accessing your Office of Water Programs (OWP) qualification records, visit our Training System Update page for access instructions.
Obtaining a QISP qualification requires completing a series of steps to ensure you are prepared for the role.
Step 1: Create an Account
To get started, all candidate QISPs must create a CASQA account. After creating a CASQA account, you will be able to complete the qualification steps and manage your certification. Visit the Qualification tab to manage your qualification and track your progress.
Step 2: Read the Industrial General Permit and SMARTS Guide
You will be asked to read the State Water Resources Control Board’s (SWRCB) Industrial General Permit (IGP) and SMARTS Guides to enhance your understanding of the IGP and its application.
Step 3: Complete a Self Assessment Questionnaire
Although no prerequisites are needed to become QISP, the QISP Online Training, and midterm and final exams are tough. We ask you to consider a series of questions so you understand how much time it will take you to complete the QISP Online Training.
Step 4: Register for the Online Training
The QISP Online Training is provided though our Learning Management System (LMS) and features a series of videos, readings, case studies, and quizzes. Registering for the Online Training costs $505. The registration includes access to the QISP Online Training for two years and to the online CASQA Industrial and Commercial BMP Handbook for one year (subject to terms & conditions). The registration fee also covers the midterm and final exams.
Here is what you should know before you register:

The midterm exam consists of 35 questions and must be passed with a score of 70% or higher. The exam must be completed in a single two-hour session.
Step 6: Register for a Training Course with an IGP ToR
After completing the midterm exam, you must take a training course offered by a qualified California Industrial General Permit Trainer of Record (IGP ToR).
- View dates and locations of upcoming QISP training courses on the QISP Training Course Calendar.
- You can also find a IGP ToR on our Qualification Directory.
Step 7: Take the Training Course Survey
After attending the training course, complete the QISP Training Course Survey to help evaluate the course’s effectiveness.

The final exam is a 70 questions and must be passed with a grade of 70% or higher. The exam must be completed in a single four-hour session.
Step 9: Receive your Certificate
Upon completing the above steps, your certification will be available in your CASQA account in the Qualification tab.
Initial QISP qualification is valid for two years.
Step 1: Complete the Most Recent IGP Review
QISPs must complete the most recent IGP Review from the Industrial General Permit Training Team (IGPTT). Currently, all QISPs must complete Module 5 – Sufficiently Sensitive Methods, TMDLs, and Compliance Options if not already completed.
Step 2: Pay for Renewal
The QISP renewal fee is $220 if renewed before the expiration date, or $240 if renewed after the certificate has expired.
After payment of the renewal fee, a new QISP certificate is automatically generated and made available in the Qualification tab.
Please note that if renewed before the certificate expiration date, the qualification will be set to expire two years after the original expiration date. If renewed after the certificate expiration date, the new expiration date will be two years from the renewal date. QISPs whose qualification has expired will be noted with an expired status in the Qualification Directory.
If you are trying to renew your QISP qualification, make sure you are logged in to access the QISP Renewal tab.
Your name, QISP certificate number, and expiration date will be be posted for public reference on the CASQA Qualification Directory. You can choose to make your contact information available as well. You are responsible for keeping your contact information current. If you change jobs, move to a new address, or change your email address, be sure to update your CASQA account information.
